The Nonlinearity Bottleneck

Solid-core fibers have long been the workhorse of photonics. However, their relatively high nonlinearity coefficient becomes a double-edged sword when dealing with femtosecond pulses. While useful for supercontinuum generation, this nonlinearity often leads to unwanted spectral broadening and temporal distortion in applications requiring pristine pulse delivery. Self-phase modulation (SPM) can rapidly degrade beam quality, limiting the maximum energy that can be transported.

Hollow-core fibers (HCFs), particularly anti-resonant varieties, offer a compelling solution. By guiding light primarily through air or a gas-filled core, we reduce the overlap with solid material by orders of magnitude. This drastically suppresses nonlinearity, allowing for the delivery of megawatt-peak-power pulses without significant degradation.

Dispersion Engineering

Another critical advantage lies in dispersion control. Solid-core fibers exhibit material dispersion that is fixed by the glass composition. In contrast, the dispersion profile of gas-filled HCFs can be finely tuned by adjusting the gas pressure.
